University exhibition tells the story of engineering in Sheffield

Enjoying the hands-on exhibitsAn exhibition exploring the past, present and future of engineering in Sheffield and the University, has opened at Western Bank Library. Engineered by US delves into the city’s engineering and manufacturing heritage and explores the vital contributions made by the University’s Faculty of Engineering.

Alongside manufacturing and engineering the exhibition showcases the faculty’s research and innovation in areas such as Sustainability and Energy, Biomedical Engineering and more. Hands on exhibits allow you to generate microbubbles for better energy efficiency and get a better understanding of the development of personalised synthetic voices for those who have lost their own through illness.

You can get an even greater understanding of the exhibits with an audio commentary, available from the library reception desk. The commentary features eight recordings including contributions from Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engineering, Professor Mike Hounslow, Emeritus Professor Jim Swithenbank and students Alex Baker and Chris Rose, who recently took Sheffield engineering to the edge of space by sending a helium-filled balloon with two video cameras into the atmosphere and filming the journey.

Professor Hounslow said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase what we do in engineering at the University of Sheffield. I can’t recall a time where so many people have recognised so clearly in the public domain that engineering matters. It matters for the economic well-being of the country and it matters for our intellectual capacity to be the sort of knowledge economy that we want to be. I hope visitors can see in this exhibition why this is true.”

In addition, you can get even more from the exhibition by scanning the numerous QR (Quick Response) codes with your mobile phone. These will allow you to view video and other internet content on your phone as you browse the exhibition.
