Record breaking turnout for Students’ Union Officer Elections

The Students' Union and University HouseOur Students’ Union has set a new national record with 8,543 students turning out to vote in this year’s Students’ Union Officer Elections.

This is the first time any student’s union has exceeded 8,000 votes, and has brought the record for student participation back to us from the Leeds University Union.

Competition was fierce this year but in the end Abdi Suleiman won the race and was crowned President of the Students’ Union.

Abdi has lived on the University’s doorstep in Broomhall since the age of three when he arrived in Sheffield as a refugee from Somalia. He was encouraged to come to the University through one of our widening participation programmes, and is currently in his third year studying philosophy.

Abdi will take over from Thom Arnold, the current Union President, in July. He will be joined by:

Tom Dixon - Activities Officer
Richard Alderman - Education Officer
Sara Moon - SU Development Officer
Fadi Dakkak - International Students' Officer
Luke MacWilliam - Sports Officer
Jon Gleek - Welfare Officer
Amy Masson - Women's Officer

Their job will be to lead Sheffield Students' Union, making key decisions on behalf of students and to represent, support and campaign for them across the University.
