Think PCC and have your say on policing
The first election of a Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) in South Yorkshire will take place on Thursday 15 November, so make sure you have your say on policing.
If you are a resident of South Yorkshire, the election is a great opportunity to influence the future of policing in the county. The Commissioner you elect will have responsibility for the totality of policing in the area. It is hoped they will take office a week after the election on 22 November.
The annual registration canvass is currently underway so make sure you respond to the form you will have received so that you can vote.
Ahead of the PCC elections, you are also invited to attend a Question Time-style event to put your questions to the South Yorkshire candidates standing for the forthcoming role. The Think PCC Question Time debate will be held on Thursday 8 November, hosted by South Yorkshire Police Authority. The event is free, but you need to apply for a ticket before 30 September. To apply for a ticket click here.
The Think PCC Question Time debate will be webcast live on the South Yorkshire Police Authority website and will be held at Rotherham United Football Club’s New York Stadium on 8 November at 6pm.
Successful applicants will be selected by a Police Authority panel to ensure the audience is made up of a representative sample of the public.
The Commissioner will replace the county’s Police Authority, taking over the role of holding the police force and the Chief Constable to account, but also having a stronger role in commissioning and managing service contracts from partner organisations, reflecting their wider intended role within the criminal justice system.
Bill Wilkinson, South Yorkshire Police Authority Chief Executive, said: “This will be the biggest reform in policing for more than a quarter of a century, so we want to ensure the South Yorkshire community is aware of the forthcoming PCC role and have the chance to question the candidates about their aims, intentions and the changes the role may bring.”
The South Yorkshire Police Authority are happy to attend any clubs or lectures which may be connected to policing or change management, so feel free to get in touch with them via their website if this is something you’d like to hear more about.
