Change your life in your lunch break
Staff and students are turning dreams into a reality this half-term holiday as they help the medics, artists, scientists and environmentalists of the future delve into a world of intriguing experiences and wacky workshops.
Opening with a shock factor event about how electricity is made, the aspiration-raising Dream Bigger Dreams is an enjoyable array of fabulously fun and educational activities.
And they haven't forgotten the grown-ups. Staff and students from the Institute for Lifelong Learning hope to inspire you with their Change Your Life in Your Lunch Break events, including Creative Writing, Languages on a Plate, and Life’s Not Fair!
Dream Bigger Dreams is taking place all this week in the Winter Garden and Millennium Square. Activities are aimed at encouraging children and adults alike to think about what they might like to do in the future. It is also a great opportunity to see all the benefits the University and our students bring to the local community.
Take a look at this week’s timetable
Activities include:
- Season It. Bring your own recipes for a community recipe book
- Bed of Nails. See a bed of nails in action and learn about the science and theory on how the combined surface area of several thousand nails can support the weight of a person.
- Professor Fluffy and the Outreach team. Delivering science and medical-based activities that they take to schools across the region.
- Swing Dancing. The Sheffield Hallam University Swing Society perform a swing dance for you while you enjoy a cup of tea.
A big thanks to all staff taking part this week. They’ve all been bitten by the discovery bug as children and they’re as passionate about their subjects now as they were then.
From an early age Professor Matthew Holley from Biomedical Science has been interested in how things work.
He said: "Life is inspiration for me. The function of every living organism is fascinating, right down to the molecular level.
"I remember a moment when I was about 14. Our biology teacher dissected a piglet, with all of us gathered round a laboratory bench.
"I think someone passed out, but for me the organisation of internal organs, blood vessels and nerves was awe-inspiring."
Dream Bigger Dreams is a joint initiative with Sheffield Hallam University and supported by the Events Team at Sheffield City Council.
