University couple race for Team GB triathlon

Dr Tim Chico and Dr Vicky Chico

A couple from the University donned their red, white and blue kit and raced for their country this summer, after qualifying to take part in 2013 Alanya ETU Sprint Distance Triathlon European Championships.

Dr Tim Chico, from the Department of Cardiovascular Science, and Dr Vicky Chico from the School of Law, were selected for Team GB back in September 2012 and travelled to Turkey in June 2013 to take part in the Championships.

The husband and wife duo took part in the multi-discipline event, which consisted of a 750m swim, followed by a 20km bike ride and finishing with a 5km run.

Dr Vicky Chico said: "It was such a brilliant experience and unlike any other competition I've been part of before – it was like another level.

"I was a bit hesitant about swimming in the sea in Turkey, but the water was so clear and warm - I really enjoyed it!"

Dr Tim Chico, who has competed in an Iron Man competition previously, added: "I was delighted to be part of Team GB and to get involved in such a fantastic event.

"Having done very little sport until recently, I feel really proud to have made the team and to have represented my country."

Tim and Vicky prepared for the event by training with local clubs and by taking their bikes, instead of the car, for their daily commute.

The couple also used the facilities at S10health Fitness to get race fit before the big day.

So what's next for the pair?

Vicky said: "I've qualified to race for Team GB again in the Triathlon European Championships in Kitzbühel, Austria next year, so I'm really excited about that."

Tim said: "I'll be keeping up the training and hope to qualify to compete again for Team GB in 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland."
