The University of Sheffield
301: Student Skills and Development Centre

301 vision

Background

Discussions around establishing a new student skills centre that would bring together existing resources, help to create new opportunties for collaborative working and provide an enhanced service to students have been on-going in the University for some time. The opening of 301 in early 2013 will see these ideas and discussions brought to life.

301 forms a key element of the Learning and Teaching Strategy 2011-16. The opening of this new facility will bring together a number of student-facing academic skills and support services, language teaching and the “Languages for All” programme, dyslexia support and Maths and Statistics Help (MASH). In collaboration with the Careers Service, the Centre will also host a range of employability skills development activities.

Our mission

Helping our students to achieve their potentialPhoto of student reading

We aim to provide services, activities and resources to support students to perform to the best of their ability and develop the skills they need to be be successful in their studies and beyond.

In addition to the well established services delivering from 301, we will offer students a new programme of activities to enable them to be confident, self-directed learners who can:

  • effectively manage their time and prioritise conflicting demands
  • use efficient techniques to maximise their study time
  • confidently and assertively convey their ideas verbally in a range of fora
  • reflect on their own development, identify skills gaps and take action to address them

Collaboration and partnership

301 is about more than bringing together a range of services under one roof. It is about working in a truly collaborative way to provide a holistic approach to student development.

We will embrace a culture of collaboration and partnership, working with Faculties, Professional Services and the Students' Union to ensure our activities complement in-curricula delivery and satisfy student needs.

We are committed to ensuring that the student voice is at the core of everything we do. To achieve this, we will work proactively with our Students' Union and provide opportunities for students to get involved in 301 delivery, planning and strategic development.

We will also systematically collect feedback from students on all of our activities as part of our evaluation strategy, and ensure this is fed back in to service enhancement and development.
