Everyday skills
When developing your academic skills, there’s no obvious place to start. You will have different existing skills and capabilities to the next person using this site; so you will each want want different things out of it and will take different routes through the content. You might have found this out already from the Being at University and Using this Site pages.
However, we suggest you start with a set of skills that you’ll use every day. They deal with central aspects of your academic experience, and offer a starting point from which you can engage with the rest of the resources on this site. These everyday skills are core to being a successful university student, so although you probably already have experience of at least some of them, it is worth paying them some more attention.
This section is divided into three areas:
Core skillscovering key academic and organisational things that will be essential for success at university, like time management
|
Working with sourcesoffering resources on finding, evaluating, and using sources, including referencing and plagiarism
|
Assessment mattersexploring issues around assessed work, including assessment criteria and exam technique
|
For University of Sheffield users, there is also a Library resource list, suggesting useful print resources. Please note that you need to be logged into MUSE to access this list.
