University Degree Title: International History & International Politics
Host University: McMaster University
Year of Study Abroad: 2009/2010

Where did you live? Would you recommend it?

I stayed on campus, in the Bates Hall. I would definitely recommend it. It is one of the biggest and livliest halls on the campus. It is rather famous for its `community events´. Most of the exchange students are located in this accommodation. Generally, living on campus is much easier, but slightly more restrictive, than living off campus. The campus is equipped with very good facilities of all kinds.

Which department(s) did you study in?

Political Science; History

How does the workload/classes/teaching styles vary to Sheffield?

The workload is slightly heavier, as most of the students have at least 4 or 5 subjects each term.

What did you do for fun/ at weekends / holidays?

The location of Hamilton is great for travelling, as it is close to Niagara Falls, US borders, Toronto, several national parks and not far from Montreal or Ottawa. McMaster Outdoor Club is perfect for organised trips. The University is also equipped with very good sporting facilities. The student life is very lively both on and off the campus, with several keg parties taking place practically every weekend.

Did you join any societies or clubs?

McMaster Outdoor Club; McMaster Conservatives; McMster AISEC; Debating Club

Describe the University/City/things to do

University is a campus-style university. Campus is nice with fine catering and sport facilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As with any city, there were a few `dodgy´ people in Hamilton, however, it has a relatively rich `underground´ culture scene and is surrounded by beautiful nature.

Could you give any travel or immigration tips?

Students should use the pick-up service from Toronto Airport offered by the McMaster University

Could you give any advice or tips to a student preparing to go or tell them anything you wished you knew in advance?

Do not bring too much stuff, as you can get it there quite cheaply, but bring (or buy) warm clothes, as it can get very cold in the area. Travel as much as possible – the infrastructure is fine and tickets or accommodation booked in advace is rather cheap.

Would you say it is cheaper or more expensive to live than Sheffield?

Services are more expensive, but items like clothes and electronics are much cheaper.
