iGEM

iGEM – the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition- involves teams of undergraduates throughout the world. In 2008 there were 85 teams.
Each team must conceive a Synthetic Biology project, predict the behaviour of the genetically engineered organism and implement it.
This competition brings together motivated and interested students to learn how to engineer organisms to unexpected ends. This has shown that the most exciting ideas do not necessarily come from experienced researchers. In 2008, the University of Sheffield has entered a team into the competition.
