MATEs Conference Buddy Scheme

One of the most significant barriers to sustained and successful collaboration across disciplines, many of which are represented in MATEs, is the existence of quite different cultures and languages. Potential culture clashes manifest themselves in terminology, operating practices, publishing conventions and especially in the conduct and style of conferences. In this buddy scheme, we will promote appreciation of different, yet complementary, cultures and language by providing network members with the opportunity to accompany a specialist in a different field to a major international conference in that specialist's area of expertise. This immersion experience will provide an insight into a foreign area of research, facilitate introductions to key workers, and provide an opportunity for on-site interpretation by the specialist of the conference subject-matter. This is far superior to attending a conference 'cold'.

Below is a list of conferences that may be of interest to network members. If you would like to attend a conference with a buddy, please download the form at the right of the page and return it by post or email at least four weeks before the conference you wish to attend. Your application will then be considered by the MATEs Network Steering Group.
