About TILL

Our history 

Adult education in Sheffield has a rich history stretching back to the formation of the University of Sheffield. Penny donations given by the city's workers helped create an institution dedicated to the further development of the local area and its communities, and many of the University's first students were working-class Sheffielders attending part-time classes.

We still hold this ideal today and we're proud of our distinctive origins as an institution set up by the people of Sheffield for the people of the Sheffield.

Our core value

This commitment is one of our core values today and for over fifty years The Institute of Lifelong Learning (TILL) has opened up the resources of the University to people who may not have otherwise considered higher education.

People with work, family or other commitments that may prevent them from studying full-time during the day are able to study for undergraduate certificates, diplomas or degrees on a part-time basis.

A flexible approach to a wide range of subjects

We offer University qualifications in a wide range of subjects from across the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences and all of our courses are designed with you in mind. Each programme is delivered in a flexible way to suit your needs and lifestyle; with classes taking place in the evenings or at weekends.

We specialise in enabling people of all backgrounds to succeed at University. Our staff are committed to helping adult learners achieve their potential and have a long experience of adult education, and of the richness and wealth of experience adults can bring into the 'classroom'. 'Classroom' maybe, but that’s where the resemblance to school ends. Most of the classes are small and take the form of short lectures and friendly discussions
