Research interests

Adam studied for his Music degree (BMus) at the University of Sheffield. His postgraduate studies have thus far centred on education, issues of assessment and widening participation in adult education.

He is currently preparing to undertake research in the area of music and the imagination. He will be considering how understanding more about the musical imagination might impact upon music teaching.

Activities and Distinctions

As a classical guitarist, Adam has performed as a soloist and as a member of a number of ensembles. These have most recently involved the arrangement
and performance of Brazilian music, and of Renaissance lute duets. He has performed on BBC Radio Sheffield and has appeared as arranger and accompanist on several recordings. Adam has also given lecture recitals on the music of John Dowland and JS Bach for the Open University.

In addition to his role as a performer, Adam also has an active interest in composition.

As a lecturer in adult education, Adam has taught for the University of Sheffield and for the Open University since 1993.

Teaching

Adam wrote and developed the part-time Certificate in Music and Creative Media for the Institute for Lifelong Learning. One of his principal aims has been to widen participation and to develop courses which recognise the enormous diversity of musical styles and experiences. As a result, our programme reflects a range of theoretical and historical perspectives and consists of courses in western art music, jazz, popular music and non-western music.

In addition, practical musicianship skills are supported in our singing and performance classes.
