BA (Hons) in Archaeological Studies

About the course

This course offers a balance of practical modules and modules which provide a foundation in both world archaeology and the archaeology of the Sheffield region. You will build on this broad basis with more specialised modules at levels 2 and 3 which integrate both the theory and practice of archaeology and which range from human origins to the development of the industrial world.

The course explores human developments from hominids to modernity, as well as the prehistory and early history of Europe. You'll study significant issues of our human past and their relevance to present questions of origin, identity and belief. You'll explore the links between science and the humanities.

Years one and two

The first two years (Level 1) are within the University's Institute of Lifelong Learning. Here the modules are taught in the evenings and on weekends allowing people who have circumstances that make it difficult to commit to a full time programme to engage with degree level learning.

These modules are also suited to people who may have been away from education for some time and are designed to give everyone an opportunity to explore a wide range of aspects of archaeology in a flexible and supportive environment.

Final four years

The programme then continues with modules within the Department of Archaeology for the final 4 years (Levels 2 and 3). These modules are taught during the traditional working week. However the part-time degree offers flexibility and a time scale to allow a balance to be found between the requirements of the course and other life circumstances such as work and child care.

During Level 2 you will undertake more specialised options alongside options which explore the history of archaeological thought. At Level 3 you will choose from a wide range of specialist topics as well as undertaking a piece of original research.

The part-time BA in Archaeology has now been running for seven years and graduates from this programme are now undertaking postgraduate studies in archaeology with others following careers in archaeology and other professions.
