French is widely regarded as a key second language, offering opportunities both for business and cultural links. This programme satisfies the needs of students who would like to develop their language skills further. It also offers an opportunity for students to gain an insight into the culture of French speaking people.

About the course

Students who receive this award will be able to display the ability to communicate in French with fluency and confidence and will be able to
respond appropriately in exchanges involving awareness of cultural issues. The modules cover the study of language, culture and society.

Students can study linguistic or cultural aspects covered in the courses in greater depth in Project I and II. These two modules involve independent study, interviews and tutorials in French.

Moving from certificate to degree

The Certificate in French Studies is a programme of study and a qualification in its own right. From 2013, if you've successfully completed the certificate, you'll be able to register for the new BA French (Modern Humanities) and progress to Level 2 of the degree.

What kind of jobs will this course prepare you for?

Languages in general offer prospective learners the ability to improve their career path or employability. Employers often require an understanding of other cultures, good oral communication skills and the discipline, work ethic and effectiveness that developing language skills clearly demonstrates.

This course is particularly suitable for those students who want to develop a career as a translator, interpreter, or teacher.
