Programme fees for 2009-10
(Certificates, Diplomas, Foundations and Degree)

The full standard fee for 2009-10 is £136 per 10 credit module. For a typical part-time student studying 60 credits per year, the full fee would be £805 a year.

Students who are in receipt of a pension pay a reduced fee of £66 per 10 credit module. This works out at £396.00 per year, based on the student taking modules to the value of 60 credits.

Students on low income may be eligible for a non-repayable grant that would enable them to study for free (see 'Fee Grants' below). Unlike full-time study, eligible part-time students can study for free without incurring any repayable student loans.

You are also able, in some circumstances, to pay your fees in up to three instalments.

Information about fees and finances for 2008-09 is available from a downloads box to the right of this page. Guidance on paying your tuition fees and registering with the University is available in the "Guide to tuition fees and the registration process" available from the same place.

Fees for general interest courses

There are three fee bands for these courses:

  • Standard fee (Band A)
For 2009-10 the fee is £136 per 10 credit module. The fee for a 20 credit module is £270.

  • Fee for those in receipt of a pension (Band B)
This rate also applies to students who are registered on a full-time course in this country. For 2009-10 the Band B fee is £68 per 10 credit module. The fee for a 20 credit module is £136.00.

  • Fee for those in receipt of benefits (Band C)
This rate applies to students who are registered unemployed, in receipt of Job Seeker's Allowance, Income Support, Working Families' Tax Credit, or New Deal Allowances, and those with a gross household income of less than £16,090. For Band C, the 2009-10 fee is £34 per 10 credit module. The fee for a 20 credit module is £68.

Please note:

  1. If you qualify for more than one band (for instance, if you are in receipt of a pension and have a gross household income of less than £16,090), then you are eligible for the lower fee band (in this example, Band C).

  2. If your gross household income is greater than £16,090 per year but less than £23,145 and you are taking at least 60 credits in the 2009-10 academic year, you may be eligible for partial financial support from your Local Authority.

  3. You may be asked to supply information to support your claim for a reduced fee.

Payment of fees

If you are paying reduced fees, you may be asked to produce evidence of your status.

Fees are payable at the beginning of each module, or set of modules. You may pay by cheque, postal order or debit/credit card. Cheques should be made payable to 'The University of Sheffield'.

You can not pay by instalments for general interest courses.

Please note: further limited costs may be incurred on modules that include day-schools or field trips.
