What TILL students say about us

Helen, BA Social and Political Studies (Combined Studies)

'My decision to study for a BA at The University of Sheffield is one of the best I have ever made. I have always had an interest in politics and my degree gave breadth and depth to my understanding of the subject. Studying part-time, with two young children, was very challenging at times, but I would advise anyone thinking of this journey to go for it!'

Graham, BA Literature and Creative Media (Combined Studies)

'Family finances forced me to start work when I was 15, foregoing the chance of a university education. At 54 I took early retirement. A few months later I embarked on the University’s Creative Writing Certificate. Six years later I fulfilled my teenage dream and graduated with a 2.1 Combined Studies degree. My growth in confidence and self-belief, along with my skills and knowledge, enabled me to become a published writer, to run writing workshops for adults and children, to become a magazine editor and, recently, to become a WEA tutor. None of this would have happened without TILL.'

Susanna, BSc Natural and Human Environments (Combined Studies)

'I began coming to TILL purely out of an interest in fungi. However, once the course began I found it all so interesting and the tutors so friendly and accessible that I ended up by submitting work for assessment. After completing the Certificate in Natural History I went on to enrol for the Degree. It has been tremendously exciting.’

Casper, Foundation Programme in Combined Studies

'I would like to thank all my tutors on the Foundation Programme. The way the programme was structured and delivered helped me to gain confidence and strength. As a mature student of 39 years of age, having left formal education in Zimbabwe 19 years ago, I found that I really enjoyed the course. It gave me a strong base in my current degree programme in Computer Aided Engineering and Design. The preparation on the programme has enabled me to settle into my current course and my experiences at foundation level allowed me to form a clear idea and shape my aspirations for what I wanted to do in the future.'

Sue, BSc IT and Organisations (Combined Studies)

'I am married, a mother to two teenage girls, work full time, and will complete my second year as a part-time student this year. As a mature student I was initially concerned that I wouldn’t be accepted or fit in. I quickly realised that there are students of all ages and nationalities and I have met so many interesting people and made some very good friends. My course has already given me an excellent boost to my confidence and is providing me with the foundations on which to build and further my career.'

Stephanie, BA French Language and Cultures (Combined Studies):

'I left school at 16. After completing a part-time A Level in French as a mature student, I wanted to continue studying on a part-time basis. I was attracted by attending regular classes along with other mature students. I find learning much more enjoyable and reassuring as a shared experience. It now gives me a lot of satisfaction when people say my French is very good.'
