PhD research in the Department of Town and Regional Planning

The Department of Town and Regional Planning is a leading international centre of excellence for planning research and was ranked as the top UK planning school in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

The Department is renowned for the quality of its research degrees and has a vibrant and growing Research School. PhD supervision is provided by leading academic researchers across the planning discipline and is supported by a rigorous programme of research training. TRP has long been recognised for its innovation in doctoral training. We have an excellent track record in PhD completions and our graduates have gone on to a range of successful careers in academia, planning and policy-related professions. Our students are encouraged to aim for the highest standards and we attract high-level students from across the world.

We are part of the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre which is one of a limited number of national centres of excellence in social science doctoral training supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The White Rose DTC is one of the largest consortia in the country and offers exciting opportunities for students to work together with others studying across the Universities of Sheffield, York and Leeds, with numerous opportunities to develop their interdisciplinary networks and expertise.

We have strong links with the University of Sheffield´s E-Futures Doctoral Training Centre and the Nuclear First Doctoral Training Centre, both of which are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Please note: we are no longer accepting applications to start PhD study in 2013.  We welcome inquiries about entry in 2014.
