Research Degrees: Supervision and Support

PhD study is based around close work with a supervisory team.

Each student has a dedicated primary and secondary supervisor and supervisory meetings take place roughly every 2 weeks in year one, followed by every 2-4 weeks in subsequent years.
Supervisory teams are selected on the basis of their substantive knowledge, methodological expertise and/or experience.

The department´s biannual review process gives students and supervisors an opportunity to comment on various aspects of the research. Students and supervisors also undertake a training needs assessment at the start of each academic year.

Research students are involved in all aspects of the intellectual life of the department through research cluster meetings, seminars and a range of additional research activities.

Career development

All of recent research students have successfully embarked on careers in research (3 lectureships in UK universities and 8 in universities overseas, 5 research posts in universities, and 7 research posts in government or in charitable research foundations).

Students are encouraged and supported to develop their career skills as part of the Research Training Programme. Doctoral students are encouraged to present their work at academic conferences and prepare papers for publication.

Support for conferences/travel

The University´s Excellence Exchange Scheme [LINK] offers funding for all research students to undertake research visits to centres of excellence around the world. Recent visits have included China, the United States, South Africa and Nigeria. The University is also a member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) which gives grants for study visits to partner universities.

Financial support for conferences is available to all research students via the University´s Learning Societies Support Fund.
