MA in Urban Design and Planning

A course jointly delivered with the School of Architecture, University of Sheffield

This new masters programme will develop your skills in urban design, planning and the development of urban areas. It is uniquely interdisciplinary in focus, opening up careers in managing, designing and planning urban spaces and places and draws on the internationally-recognised strengths of the University of Sheffield in planning, architecture, and real estate.

Interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in working across professional boundaries have been increasingly recognised as critical to dealing with the complex, multi-faceted problems of urban areas. This programme seeks to provide the knowledge and skills for you to participate in developing sensitive plans and policies and creative designs with an appreciation of the financial and practical issues associated with property development.

  • International focus - with opportunities to develop skills in analysing, designing, and managing rapidly urbanising areas whilst also learning from the UK urban experience
  • Flexibility – students can choose to study urbanisation and urban planning issues both in Europe and the Global South.
  • Wide range of elective modules, allowing students to develop specialist knowledge in planning, architecture and design, or real estate
  • Fully supervised Thesis Design Project or Dissertation allows students to combine knowledge and skills in design, planning, and property development
  • Teaching from experts based in leading Architecture and Planning schools in the UK

Admissions criteria

All applications are treated individually. The usual entry requirement is a 2:1 degree or evidence of equivalent achievement (for example, a professional qualification combined with work experience). Applications are also welcomed from candidates with a 2:2 degree, although evidence of work experience or other activity is generally expected.
