Students doing fieldworkBe the best you can be

What's special about Sheffield? Learn town and regional planning here and we'll help you develop a critical, questioning approach to the subject.

You'll get a solid grounding in the way planning works – but you'll learn to do things your own way. You'll learn to put people first, rather than processes.

Our approach makes us one of the best places to take a degree in planning. It's not just us who say so. Independent assessments of our teaching give us some of the highest ratings possible.

And our students enjoy learning with us. In the 2012 National Student Survey, 87 per cent said they were satisfied with their course – one of the highest ratings of any UK planning school.

Study with us and you'll stand out from the crowd. You'll be the best you can be. You'll ask the right questions and you'll make great things happen.

Our degrees in planning are designed with your career in mind. Your project work will blend the local and the global. It brings you into contact with real issues concerning nearby developments and communities. Meanwhile, in your second year you'll go further afield, travelling to a major European city to undertake more fieldwork.

And when governments, research councils, businesses and voluntary groups need expertise in research, they come to our staff, who are leaders in their specialist fields. These close links with the workplace help us to make sure our planning courses are up-to-the-minute and relevant – so our graduates have the right skills and knowledge to go all the way.

Royal Town Planning InstituteOur degrees are accredited by the Royal Institute of Town Planning (RTPI). Students on our MPlan degree also get a meaningful work placement – usually with a local authority or consultancy firm – offering first-hand experience of real-world planning issues.

We'll help you realise your potential. You'll make your mark on the world.

What our graduates do

Around a quarter of our graduates move on to other careers such as financial services, retail and teaching, and to further academic study.

The Geography and Planning BuildingLocation, population, co-operation

We expect a lot from our students. But we provide a lot in return. Our staff offer an 'open door' approach to student support. They're also committed to giving prompt and positive feedback on all your work.

You'll also be able to join our student society. This offers you a say in how the department is run, and plenty of fun at the society's events and evenings out.

We're based in a purpose-built and newly refurbished Geography and Planning Building (pictured left) with new workspace, social areas and cafe.

This is located on the edge of the city centre, overlooking Weston Park – which makes it a picturesque setting as well as a stimulating place to study, with a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere.

And while Sheffield is one of Britain's biggest urban areas, and undergoing major regeneration projects, it's also the only major city to include National Park land within its boundaries. As well as a great place to live, it's a fascinating place to see planning in action. Study here and you can watch both urban and rural planning projects unfold before your eyes.
