Deferred entry

If you don't want to begin your studies straight away, you can defer your entry for a year. For example, you can apply in autumn 2013 for entry in September 2015. We welcome applications for deferred entry and treat them on an equal basis to other applications. If you apply for deferred entry:

Direct entry to Year/Level 2

We are happy to consider applications for entry to the second year of an undergraduate course, if you can demonstrate that you have undertaken and successfully completed a programme of study equivalent to the first year of the course for which you are applying. We reserve the right to determine whether you have covered an equivalent area of study; in assessing this we may require you to provide further information on your studies to date, including course syllabuses.

Foundation Year courses

We offer foundation years in:

These foundation years are intended for strong applicants who do not have the required subject background (eg maths or other science subject) for entry to the first year of these courses. They may also be suitable for International applicants who have completed their secondary school education in their country of origin and achieved a high standard in a qualification which is not deemed to be equivalent to a UK Level 3 qualification such as an A Level.

You should check the suitability of your qualifications with the relevant department before submitting an application. Please also see the online undergraduate prospectus for further information about our Foundation Years.

Widening participation

The University aims to encourage applications from the widest range of educational, social and ethnic backgrounds. We work with a number of schools and colleges to ensure that students who have the potential to benefit from and to succeed in studying at Sheffield have the opportunity to do so. We run outreach and access schemes like the Sheffield Outreach and Access to Medicine Scheme (SOAMS) to target students from groups currently under-represented in Higher Education. Admissions Tutors may give special consideration to students who participate in these schemes.

For more information on the University's outreach and access schemes, please call us on 0114 222 1249.
