Heritage Open Day 2010, Western Bank Library and Information Commons

Friday 10 September 2010, 10.00am-4.00pm

Western Bank Library is 50 years old and this landmark building has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. Starting in July 2009, the project aimed to improve facilities for researchers and other users of the library. One of the highlights is a new, quality exhibition space, attracting high profile exhibitions. Other features include the installation of new study areas, soft seating, group study rooms and individual study spaces.

Special Collections and Archives

The Special Collections and Archives Department holds some 150 collections of both special collections (printed books, periodicals and pamphlets) and archives (manuscripts, ephemera and mainly unpublished primary materials).

The National Fairground Archive

Housed in the Western Bank Library, the NFA is a unique collection of photographic, printed, manuscript and audiovisual material covering all aspects of the culture of travelling showpeople, their organisation as a community, their social history and everyday life; and the artefacts and machinery of fairgrounds.

The Information Commons

The Award-Winning Information Commons

The Information Commons is a joint venture between Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS) and the University Library. Born out of completely fresh thinking about learning resources for the 21st century student, it contains a whole range of study spaces within a single spectacular building.

The IC's primary objective is to deliver high quality IT-enabled study space and 24 hour access to heavily-used student materials.

Guided Tours of the Library and its Collections

Members of staff will be on hand to guide tours and answer questions. Entry is free of charge.
