A BOY WAS BORN
A Festival of Music Celebrating 100 years of Benjamin Britten
The composer Benjamin Britten worked prolifically in almost every genre. His mastery of the orchestra, his brilliant and versatile approach to musical drama, his ingenuity and sensitivity in the marriage of music and text in song, and his commitment to making music accessible to all by composing for amateurs and children has ensured Britten’s music still continues to enthral and capture the imagination of audiences around the world.
A Boy Was Born aims to encourage performance of Benjamin Britten’s music throughout the 2013 centenary year. The festival will promote better understanding of his life, work as composer and musical innovator; in addition to examining the broader context of arts and culture in the 20th century.
Encompassing talks, concerts, films, musical theatre productions and education work, internationally acclaimed visiting artists perform alongside community musical organisations in the city in this yearlong Sheffield celebration of music, culture and Benjamin Britten.

Premiered in 1958, the musical Goldilocks is a parody of the silent film era. Set in New York in 1913 Goldilocks tells the story of Maggie Harris, a glamorous leading lady of the theatre who is retiring to marry her millionaire fiancé George Randolph Brown. Before Maggie can retire she has one final engagement, as she is contracted to star in manipulative film director Max Grady’s latest flick. In Goldilocks we see Max’s attempts to woo Maggie away from her fiancé, aspiring actress Lois Lee’s attempts to seduce Max and the constant interference of Bessie, who owns the barn where much of the movie is shot. Not to be confused with the famous Children's story of the same name, this rarely performed sparkling adult comedy features witty, unforgettable songs with lyrics by Jean and Walter Kerr; a dazzling score composed by Leroy Anderson (famous for orchestral works Sleigh Ride and The Syncopated Clock) is performed by Department of Music students.
