Following from the great success of our first Research of the Future workshop that was held last Summer, we are pleased to invite expressions of interest to attend our next event in Spring 2014. Research of the Future is a forum for collective thinking and challenging debate about which research areas the University will be internationally recognised for by the year 2022. The output will be a list of emerging research themes and projects for further consideration during 2014/15. Attendees will include both researchers and our non-academic partners including high profile representatives from the commercial sector and governmental bodies. Quentin Cooper science journalist and broadcaster returns as our guest speaker and we are excited to be working again with Know Innovation to develop a stimulating and inspiring agenda that moves beyond the conventional workshop forms of activity.
Those who participate will have the opportunity to receive one of the following:
• An interdisciplinary PhD student network award, which will provide stipends and consumables budgets for 3 students
• Two £5,000 ideas generation support funds to kick start novel collaborations or feasibility studies
• Continued support to develop research communities and collaboration both within and outside of the University
Those eligible to apply include all research active staff with some places reserved for post doctoral researchers. Applications are welcome from all 5 faculties on campus and those working at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. Please note that if you attended the last Research of the Future event on the 1-2 July last year, you will not be invited to participate at this next workshop. Obviously this does not stop anyone, over the longer term, from participating in any projects or group activities that do emerge out of this session.
Please think beyond the following research themes when putting together your expression of interest:
Future/sustainable cities (including issues of waste, infrastructure & political change)
Imaging for biological applications
Topics already supported under the Engineering for Life initiative
Successful applicants will be expected to attend both the afternoon session of the 31 March and the morning session on 1 April.
