New City of Makers street market to showcase next generation of Sheffield artists

DIY, street and punk aspects of crafts and printmaking will be showcased at a new street and print market in Sheffield later this month (25 February 2017), as part on a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and City of Makers

The event, at The Art House in Sheffield, will be free of charge and will see more than 10 artists, illustrators and printmakers demonstrate their work, as well as include a series of ‘Have a Go’ drop-in workshops.

A range of activities from graffiti workshops to stencil-cutting demonstrations will be available to all, as well as street art masterclasses by local street artists Ment and Byne.

The market is a celebration of the success of Sheffield’s first international street art trail, Feature Walls, where 17 internationally recognised street artists transformed the city’s walls into an expansive outdoor gallery last October.

Original prints, postcards, t-shirts and other merchandise by artists such as Barney Lloyd, Oliver Allchin Kirski K will also be featured.

The Year of Making Sheffield 2016 is led by Sheffield Culture Consortium, with partners the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Chamber of Commerce, Made in Sheffield, The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and Sheffield City Council.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield said: “The market celebrates Sheffield’s cultural vibrancy, showcasing some of the young street artists and up and coming designers in this city.

“It is a great way for the city to show its support for the next generation of Sheffield artists.”

The event will take place on Saturday 25 February 2017 from 11am until 5pm and is in collaboration with the Making Ways project and the Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID).

The Year of Making 2016 celebrated our past, present and future as a city of makers and as City of Makers it continues to promote a world city with an international reputation for excellence and innovation.

Making Ways

Making Ways will stimulate and support the development of artistic talent and leadership by building the profile of the artistic community, brokering relationships with business and industry and developing a living economy that will stimulate and support growth.
