Sustainability at Sheffield is about more than traditional green ideas.

We use our power as a research-led university to tackle interlinked social, environmental and economic challenges through ambitious, interdisciplinary thinking. By researching areas such as food, energy, poverty and urban development, and through our operations and the values we instill in our graduates, we're finding new and innovative ways to contribute to a more sustainable world.

Sustainable development is not a destination; it's an ongoing process that requires us to continually review our practices and reassess our assumptions. By viewing these challenges holistically and acknowledging that our decisions will require trade-offs and compromises, we can develop and implement positive and pragmatic solutions within our University and across wider society.

Our sustainability strategy, published at the start of the 2018/19 academic year, commits us to action over the next year. This is a living document that we will update at the start of the 2019/20 year with further metrics and an action plan for the next decade.

Our sustainability strategy

Through the work of our students, staff and our operations we make a difference locally and globally. We are a civic university for the 21st century.

We teach the value of civic responsibility. We encourage social entrepreneurship. And we provide support for those who want to make a difference.

Ethical and sustainable procurement is a key concern for our University. We also strive to be a remarkable place to work – we're proud to be recognised as a top 100 employer by the Sunday Times.
