Director of Accommodation & Commercial Services and UNICUS
Caryn joined the University in 2011 bringing with her 20 years experience gained in both the private and public sector, within the UK and South Africa.
As Director of Accommodation and Commercial Services, Caryn is responsible for the teams who provide a range of services and facilities to staff, students and visitors across the University, including student accommodation, catering and delivered hospitality, conferences and event management. In addition, Caryn is a Director of UNICUS, a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University. UNICUS was set up in 2012 to develop a commercial proposition to enhance the offer to the University. UNICUS operates a boutique hotel, a village store for the community, a high end restaurant, a number of retail outlets and a staffing agency.

Human Resources Manager & UNICUS Business Partner
Sam joined the University in 2013, supporting several Professional Services departments as HR Manager. She brought with her over 25 years’ experience as an HR professional within both the global commercial and FE sectors. In 2015 Sam was appointed as Business Partner for the subsidiary company UNICUS, in addition to providing ongoing support for ACS.
Sam is responsible for leading and delivering HR operational and strategic services across the department, as well as input into the Department’s training and development provision. This includes: supporting and managing the delivery of easy access to HR services for colleagues, organisational change and design to support the changing needs of the business and assisting in the development of an integrated training plan to meet current and future needs of the business.

Head of Commercial Services
Gavin joined the University in 2006. His extensive experience of over 25 years in the hospitality industry includes a position as Executive Chef at the University of Nottingham where he had the opportunity to cater for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as well as managerial roles at Derby County Football Club and Manchester City FC.
As Head of Commercial Services Gavin's teams within Unicus and Commercial Services deliver all of the sales, catering and event services within the University portfolio both on and off campus. Gavin was recently interviewed on the popular BBC 1 daytime television series ‘Countryfile’ about the University’s long term support of local dairy supplier, Our Cow Molly.
Gavin is a Board member of The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO) where his heritage spans 20 years including winning a Gold Medal at the annual TUCO Skills Competitions. As part of his role within TUCO Gavin shares best practice, drawing on member expertise and the wider industry to look at new and improved ways of working across the sector as a whole.

Head of Accommodation Services
Ian joined the University in 2007 and before that worked at Royal Holloway, University of London, Sodexho and London School of Economics.
As Head of Accommodation Services, Ian is responsible for the physical infrastructure of the residential accommodation estate and for the teams who provide student accommodation, portering, cleaning, customer services and Residence Life.

Head of Training & Quality
David McKown is a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality and joined the University of Sheffield in 1992. David is a qualified trainer and Further Education Teacher.
Achievements in his career to date include the Cost Sector Catering Award for the University/College Sector and the TUCO Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Sector. In 1998, he created the internationally renowned Skills for Chefs Conference and this takes place each year during the summer.
David was awarded Honorary Membership of the Master Chefs of Great Britain (MCGB) in 2012 having developed and supported the organisation since 1996 when he invited the MCGB to present a dinner at the University of Sheffield. This dinner is now an annual event at the University.
In 2011, David became a Director of University Hospitality Seminars Ltd., a company that designs, organises and delivers training for staff working in Higher Education Institutions across the UK. David has lectured at a wide range of HE Institutions in England, Scotland & Wales.

Head of Finance
Dave joined the University in 2006 and before that had worked in the commercial leisure sector for 15 years. The majority of time was spent with Whitbread Plc covering restaurants, hotels, pubs and brewing, working with brands such as Marriott, Premier Inn, Costa, Brewers Fayre, Beefeater and TGI Fridays. Additionally, Dave spent two years as Financial Controller for the Gatecrasher nightclub and music brand.
As the Head of Finance for ACS, Dave is now responsible for the teams that provide financial support to ACS operations and management accounting information for both ACS and UNICUS, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University, for which Dave also acts as Company Secretary.
On a national level, Dave is also a member of the College & University Business Officers (CUBO) Finance Steering Group.
