ACSE PhD students receive national awards in Control and Automation
Two ACSE research students have been awarded first and second place in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Control and Automation Doctoral Dissertation Awards 2017.
Dr Wenlong Ming, former student of the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, was given the prestigious award in November 2017 for his outstanding dissertation in the area of advanced control and power electronics techniques to holistically remove two major challenges in single-phase power converters. He now works as a Lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Engineering.
He received a PhD from The University of Sheffield in 2015, under the supervision of ACSE’s Dr Hua-Liang Wei and Professor Qing-Chang Zhong.
Dr Ming said: “I am extremely excited and honoured to receive the 2017 IET Control & Automation PhD Award. During my PhD study, I found the holistic integration of control and power electronics technologies is one of the keys to address challenging problems in future energy and power systems. This award greatly motivates me to further explore in this research field.”
Dr Olga Isupova, also a former ACSE PhD student, took second place in the competition with her research in 'Machine learning methods for behaviour analysis and anomaly detection in video’. She completed her PhD in July 2017, under the supervision of Professor Lyudmila Mihaylova.
Both students beat off competition from around the country and clinched the prizes for the theoretical contribution of their work, backed up by rigorous experimental validation and publication records in IEEE journals and conferences.
Professor Daniel Coca, Head of Department of ACSE, said: “I would like to congratulate both Wenlong and Olga on their successes in the IET competition. They are fantastic ambassadors for our Department, our Engineering Faculty and the University as a whole. The awards recognize their hard work and dedication during their PhD studies as well as highlight the world-leading quality of our research and the world-class research supervision we provide”.
