International Student Profile: roopikaravikannaRoopika Ravikanna

MSc Robotics

I have recently graduated with an MSc in Robotics from the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) at the University of Sheffield. The department is ranked number one in the UK in terms of research output and this is one of the main reasons I chose the university. Prior to this I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Robotics and Automation from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, India.

I have always believed that Robotics is a field that foresees unseen innovations and provides human beings with a protected environment, through Industrial, Rescue and Medical Robotics. My desire to improve living standards of people, using robotics, is why I decided to come to Sheffield.

As well as studying for my MSc I was also departmental councillor for ACSE. I was selected as the international student ambassador dealing specifically with South Asian students. Outside of the department I was involved in a number of extra-curricular activities. I have been active in writing poetry for many years now. My first on-stage poetry performance has been in Sheffield. I have performed my poems in various poetry societies and festivals, since arriving. I am also a regular volunteer at the Sunday Centre for Homeless in Sheffield. The charity recognised my contribution and I got a chance to interact with organisers from various charities across Yorkshire.

The content of the course puts students in a great position to pursue either further research or a career in industry.

The collection of modules you study comprise of all the essential requirements expected out of robotics engineer. Alongside this the research you are required to take up during your studies also plays a key role in helping transition to a career in industry. Together this makes you desirable in a variety of industries including automation, automobile, control and mechatronics.

I have currently obtained a paid internship to work as an academic researcher in a UK N8 Research project based in Agricultural Robotics. Renowned automobile and robotics companies are keen on building a strong base in India. In the coming decade, there is going to be a massive requirement for robotics specialists everywhere in the world.
