SURE Summer Placement
I am currently studying for an MEng in Systems and Control Engineering in the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering - about to head into my final year in September.
SURE offers UG students the opportunity to become directly involved in research. It gives them a taste of real life research projects in an area of their interest. Students gain first-hand experience of working in partnership with academics and develop collaborative skills in a research group setting.
Dr Robin Purshouse, Reader in Decision Modelling and Optimisation in ACSE
Currently I am undertaking a SURE (Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience) placement with ACSE's Dr Robin Purshouse and the CASCADE team. They are an international group of researchers developing models to study why people drink, and the factors that affect this. These models are then used to predict how alcohol use will change in the future.
My role involves looking at developing a classifier, using machine learning, that will recognise when a mathematical model ‘run result’ is realistic or not. I have been using the Matlab and R programming languages to help achieve this. These results can be used to further improve the accuracy in subsequent models.
I decided to carry out a SURE placement because I was unsure whether I wanted to go into industry or academia after graduation. Previously I have carried out an industrial summer placement at Renishaw plc, but the SURE placement gaves me a taste of academia. I’ve enjoyed the placement so far, the work has been interesting and challenging and I’ve learnt a new programming language in the process.
I would definitely recommend the SURE scheme to other students especially if they are considering working in academia in the future.
