An STFC PhD studentship in Space Plasma Physics

Applications are welcomed for a fully funded STFC PhD position in the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) at the University of Sheffield.

We are looking for a bright and motivated student with a minimum of a 2:1 degree in Physics or a relevant subject (e.g. Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics or Systems Engineering) to study for a PhD.
The project will be in the field of the physics of space, solar and astrophysical plasma.
The successful applicant will work with world leading experts in advanced analytical/numerical modelling, analysis of high-resolution observations obtained by cutting-edge ground and space based instruments. They are actively involved in a number of past/present/future space missions and solar observational projects.
In terms of space research, the Space Science Laboratory in ACSE is the Principle Investigator for the Digital Wave Processor instrument, the central part of the Cluster Wave Experiment Consortium onboard each of the ESA Cluster spacecraft and has also provided onboard software and data processing for the NASA Cassini and ESA Venus Express missions, for which it holds Co-Investigator positions. It is involved in new and upcoming missions, such as the JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) mission.
The Space Science Laboratory (as part of the wider Solar Physics and Space Plasma Research Centre (SP2RC) at The University of Sheffield) was recently awarded the STFC grant “Dynamics of key radiation belt emissions” (April 2018 to March 2021) and the successful applicant would have the opportunity to contribute to this active research project (depending on the topic of PhD chosen).
In terms of solar research ACSE is involved in numerical (HPC) and analytical modelling of MHD wave processes in the solar atmosphere plasma; observational data analysis from Solar Dynamic Observatory (NASA) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (NASA).
We also participate in the projects related to the ground-based Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, the most advanced to date, capturing its first images in 2019 and European Solar Telescope (SST).
