Jacob Ngome

MEng Mechatronic & Robotic Engineering Year in Industry at Airbus Group UK

How did you find your Year in Industry placement?

I received an email from my department alerting all students of the placement opportunity. I was interested in the area, so I prepared my CV and covering letter and applied.

What are you doing on your placement?

I am working on model predictive control with application to energy and power management for aircraft systems.

What has been the best thing about your placement so far?

At the time of writing I have been on placement for nearly six months, so I've developed really good relationships with my team and I have to say that working with them is definitely one of the best things about my placement so far.

What has been the biggest challenge?

Professionally the biggest challenge is planning my own work, setting objectives and milestones, self monitoring and self assessing. Working in industry is very different to the work I was doing towards my degree!

How has the placement complemented your studies?

I have relied heavily on all my acquired knowledge and skills from university and through the placement I have been able to identify my strengths as well as any gaps in my technical knowledge. I will continue to work on these during the remainder of my placement and will continue developing these areas once back in university.

What have you got out of your placement?

I have gained an appreciation for a lot of things that I perhaps took for granted whilst at university, for example areas such as organisation and planning. Furthermore, my technical ability is growing exponentially and I have made and continue to make some very important acquaintances.
