Degree classification weightings

How your degree classification is calculated

Year 1 grades are not taken into account in determining your final degree classification. Your achievements in years 2 and 3 of the BEng course, and years 2, 3 and 4 of the MEng course, are used to determine your final degree classification.

The grades you achieve for the modules taken in years 2, 3 and 4 will be used to determine a weighted mean grade, with the grades in year 3 (and also in year 4 for MEng students) carrying more weight than those in year 2.

BEng

  • Year 2 modules carry a weighting of 1
  • Year 3 modules carry a weighting of 2

MEng

  • Year 2 modules carry a weighting of 1
  • Year 3 modules carry a weighting of 2
  • Year 4 modules carry a weighting of 2

Year in North America & Study Abroad

For Year in North America and study abroad students the weighting is:

  • Year 2 modules carry a weighting of 1
  • Year 3 modules carry a weighting of 1
  • Year 4 modules carry a weighting of 2

Further details of how your degree is calculated can be found in the Assessment & Progression Handbook.
