Linda Smith, radio comedienne and Sheffield graduate, has died of cancer
The University was very saddened to hear of the death of one of our most successful and best-loved graduates, Linda Smith, following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. Linda died on 27 February, aged 48.
Graduating from Sheffield in 1982 with a BA in English and Drama, Linda went on to become one of the small band of women to make it to the top of the male-dominated world of comedy. A stalwart of Radio 4 quiz shows, such as the News Quiz, she was greatly admired by listeners who voted her “wittiest person” in a recent poll.
She also wrote and starred in two radio sit-com series of her own, Linda Smith's A Brief History of Time Wasting, about life in a tower block. A veteran of the Edinburgh fringe she also appeared on shows such as Have I Got News For You?, QI, and Mock the Week.
Linda’s unique blend of personal, political and “down-right silly” humor will be missed by many.
