Alumni in Singapore and Malaysia gathered at special alumni receptions in April. Hosted by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Boucher, they were also attended by distinguished Sheffield alumnus and Nobel Laureate Dr Richard Roberts, who was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

In Singapore 80 alumni attended the reception at the Shangri-La Hotel on 1 April, to catch up with old friends and hear from the Vice-Chancellor about new developments taking place at the University. Dr Roberts, who graduated from the University of Sheffield with BSc Chemistry in 1965 and a PhD in 1968, also spoke about his experiences at Sheffield and the importance of staying in touch and supporting the University.

The University also helped to celebrate Malaysia’s 50th anniversary of independence this year with a special alumni gathering on 5 April. Two hundred and fifty graduates in Malaysia attended the reception at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. They were thrilled to hear from the Vice-Chancellor about the University’s progress, whilst mention of the new Information Commons Building brought a huge round of applause.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that to celebrate Malaysia’s 50th anniversary of independence, the University will provide at least four scholarships to help Malaysian students study at Sheffield. Alumni were encouraged to support this worthy cause by making a donation to the Dato Dr Ikmal Hisham Albakri Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are named in honour of one of the University’s most distinguished graduates, Dato Dr Albakri (Cert. Arch, 1955, Dip.Arch 1956, Hon. LittD 1992), who was the University’s first Malaysian Architecture graduate.

Dr Richard Roberts was also in attendance at the event where he met with other alumni and gave a short speech to encourage their support.
