Alumni football tournament kicks off World Cup fever
Sporty graduates from the University of Sheffield donned their football boots and showed off their skills on the pitch this weekend (Saturday 12 June 2010), as part of a special alumni six-a-side football tournament.
The event, which kick-started World Cup season by taking place just ahead of England’s World Cup opener with USA, saw former University Intra Mural teams rekindle their football memories.
30 teams took to the pitch, featuring former students from all over the country, including London, Ireland and Scotland, before team ‘Sweden’ were declared the ultimate winners following a 1-0 victory. The winning team members were given ‘Back the Bid’ t-shirts as a prize, designed in support of the city’s bid to host football matches if England is selected to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.
The event also tied in with the Football Association’s ‘England Football Day,’ which was launched by football stars John Terry and Matthew Upson, who hope to lead England to victory in the World Cup. The football dedicated day was aimed at getting the whole country behind England’s football team to show national pride in the game.
Miles Stevenson, Director of Development in the Alumni Relations Office at the University of Sheffield, said: “It is fantastic to see so many recent graduates taking part in the first alumni football tournament. We know that Intra Mural sport plays an important part of student life at the University and it is great to give alumni the chance to re-live these experiences now that they have graduated.”
