Heritage Circle Lunch 2011 – Friday 21 October 2011

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett hosted the second
annual
lunch for memBeer tasting at the Heritage Circle Lunchbers of the Heritage Circle gift club. This gift club has been established to recognise the special commitment of people who choose to support the University through a planned gift in their will.

The day started with a drinks reception in Firth Hall and guests had the opportunity to meet with members of staff and the guest speakers. After lunch guests were invited into the Tapestry Room where they were treated to a selection of short talks from our special guests including Professor Dave Hornby (BSc Biochemistry 1980) Head of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and Dr Claire McGourlay (PhD Law 2002) from the Department of Law. We were delighted to have two such eminent academics talking about their current research interests.

Professor Hornby spoke about many of the famous scientists who have studied at the University and in particular, Sir Hans Krebs who won the Nobel Prize in 1953. Dr Claire McGourlay is a senior lecturer in the Department of Law and along with four current students, she discussed the Sheffield Innocence Project and the Sheffield Law Legal Clinic.

After the talks, guests were taken into the Krebs Room and were treated to a beer tasting session with recent graduate, Miss Claire Monk (BSc Molecular Biology 2009) from the Welbeck Abbey Brewery. Finally, farewell refreshments were served and staff from the Development and Alumni Relations Office were on hand to answer any questions guests had.

The event was a great success and the date for the next Heritage Circle Lunch will be announced in the newsletter “A legacy to Sheffield”, to be circulated in January 2012.
