House of Lords Drinks Reception – Thursday 6 October 2011

View over the Thames from the House of Lords

University of Sheffield alumni and friends attended an exclusive drinks reception at the prestigious House of Lords venue. This is the third time we have held the event and the evening was once again kindly hosted by The Rt Hon the Lord Hattersley. He was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992 and received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield in 1998.

Many of the 250 guests enjoyed a tour of the Houses of Parliament which included a visit to the House of Lords, House of Commons and Westminster Palace. A drinks' reception was then held in the Cholmondeley Room overlooking the River Thames.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett, FRS, welcomed the guests to the House of Lords and thanked alumni for their continuing support. Lord Hattersley then gave a short speech about this affection for the University of Sheffield and gave encouraging words about supporting the University.

The event was once again very popular with the guest list filling up in less than 24 hours and a reserve list of over 300 people. We therefore hope to organise a similar event in the near future.
