If you would like to donate to a particular Faculty or Department within the University, or to a specific project, please select the relevant option on our online donations page. Alternatively, please contact us on +44 (0)114 222 5598 or email giving@sheffield.ac.uk 100% of your gift (and the Gift Aid, if applicable) will be allocated to the area of greatest need, or to the project of your choosing. We never spend any of the money you donate on administration costs.

Can my donation be anonymous?

Yes. If you would like your donation to be anonymous, please make sure you tick the relevant box on our paper or online donation form. If you choose to make your gift anonymously, we will continue to send you donor and alumni communications, but we will not include your name in our Donor Honour Roll or on our Donor Honour Board.

Can I leave you a gift in my will?

A gift of a legacy is deeply appreciated and we are happy to provide confidential support to help you decide the most effective way of giving as well as agreeing the most appropriate way of recognising your gift. For more detailed information, please visit our Legacies web page. If you would like to receive more information or speak to someone at the University about leaving a bequest, please contact David Meadows, Development Officer, on +44 (0)114 222 1073 or by emailing d.meadows@sheffield.ac.uk

Can I make a donation as a tribute in honour or memory of someone?

Donations can be made in memory of a friend or a loved one, or a particular person who has made an impact on you. In memoriam donations will be attributed to you, but in our Donor Honour Roll we will also mention that the gift has been made in memory of that person.

We also receive requests to set up a Fund in memory of a person, and the funds raised can be used to support a particular scholarship/prize or project that was relevant to that person. An example of this recently has been the Richard Pover Memorial Fund.

Tax efficient giving

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid gives the University an extra 25p for every £1 you donate. Gift Aid is designed to benefit charities. If you’re a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid increases the value of your charity donations by 25% because the charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift at no extra cost to you.

Can you claim Gift Aid on my donations?

Yes. All you need to do is fill out a Gift Aid Declaration (online, paper donation form, verbally). This is a statement confirming that you are happy for us to claim Gift Aid on your donations.

Your donations won’t qualify for Gift Aid if they are more than four times what you’ve paid in tax that tax year. If you stop paying enough tax at any point, you must let us know.

For a charity to claim Gift Aid on your donation you must first have paid UK Income or Capital Gains Tax that financial year. The tax you pay must be equivalent to the amount of Gift Aid the charity will reclaim on your donation that tax year, (and will be claimed by other charities and CASCs). VAT and Council Tax do not meet these criteria.

I’m a higher rate taxpayer – can I give tax-efficiently?

Yes. We will reclaim the tax on your donation only at the basic rate, even if you are a higher rate taxpayer. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax and the current basic rate of tax of 20% on your Self-Assessment return.

I would like to make a gift through my business - how is it beneficial to do so?

A limited company pays less Corporation Tax when it makes a donation of money or shares to a charity. This can be done by claiming tax relief and the business deducting the value of its donations from its total business profits before it pays tax.

However, there are certain situations where tax relief won't apply, including payments that:

  • are loans that will be repaid by the charity or that come with a condition about repayment
  • are made on the condition that the charity will buy property from your company or anyone connected with it
  • are a distribution of company profits (e.g. dividends)

Also, any benefits given by the charity in return for the donation (e.g. tickets to an event) must be below a certain value. Please visit www.gov.uk/tax-limited-company-gives-to-charity/donating-money.

The company should keep a record of its charitable donations, to support entries on the Company Tax Return, together with any other relevant documentation, such as the thank you letter the charity would send to acknowledge receipt of the donation. Please note that there are different rules of sole traders and partnerships.

Thanking and recognition

Yes. If you send a donation by post or by paying directly into our bank account we will send you confirmation and thanks by post, unless you advise us otherwise. If you donate online, you will also receive an email confirmation almost immediately as receipt of your gift.

How will my gift be recognised?

Every donor is thanked in our Honour Roll, which is included in our annual donor magazine, Your Gift, which is sent each Spring. Your Gift updates donors on how their gifts impact upon the life and work of academics, students and the wider community.

The University is also pleased to welcome donors into our special Gift Clubs, enabling us to thank and recognise supporters who have shown particular commitment in their giving. To find out more please visit our Gift Clubs web page.

If you would rather your gift remains anonymous, please make sure to tick the relevant box on our paper or online donation form.

How we’ll use your details

What will you do with my details?

As explained above, we like to keep all our supporters up to date with our work, so may contact you from time to time by email, post or phone to tell you how your donations are making a real difference to Sheffield students.

Under the terms of the Data Protection Act (1998), The University of Sheffield will use the information provided by you for the University of Sheffield's education, social, administrative and fundraising purposes only. How can I change the way the University of Sheffield contacts me?

We think it is really important to keep all our donors updated on the work their donations have achieved. Most of our updates will come by email or post, but you may also receive a phone call from a member of our student calling team, letting you know how you may be able to help even more.

If at any time you would like to change the way that we contact you, please update your contact preferences via our Contact Preferences form.

Who from the University of Sheffield might contact me by telephone?

At times, the University of Sheffield may contact people by telephone to ask for support. Throughout the year we use a team of current students to telephone our alumni from the University, to speak to them about their time at Sheffield and experiences since graduation. They also provide updates on developments at the University, explain the areas that need support and ask you to consider making a donation.

Our students enjoy talking, but they also love to listen, so these calls are a great chance to reminisce about your time at Sheffield and hear about what life is like for a Sheffield student today. All calls from our team of current students at the University of Sheffield will be from the telephone number 0114 252 5788.

If you would like to support the University of Sheffield, but would prefer not to donate over the telephone, our callers will be happy to send you a donation form by email or post.

If you would prefer not to receive calls like this, please update your contact preferences via our Contact Preferences form.

There may also be times where members of the Development, Alumni Relations and Events (DARE) office may need to contact you by telephone for administrative reasons, or to confirm details for an event etc. If you would like to see a full list of contact details for DARE, please see our Contact Us page.
