Alumni return to campus for Anniversary Reunions
Over 200 alumni returned to the University to celebrate their anniversaries of graduation over the summer. Saturday 18th July saw over 70 graduates and their guests return to celebrate 50 and 60 years since their graduation and on Saturday 12th September graduates from 25, 30 and 40 years ago returned to Sheffield.
The graduating classes of 1949 and 1959 enjoyed lunch in Firth Hall hosted by Professor Paul White, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, followed by tours of the campus and Information Commons. Many graduates had not been back to the University campus for over 40 years and it provided a wonderful opportunity to meet old classmates and reminisce about their time at University. One 1949 graduate was particularly keen to see the dramatic changes to the campus. He was born in faculty housing on the site of what is now the Concourse and the Alfred Denny Building for Animal and Plant Sciences.
The afternoon concluded with drinks in the Students’ Union and a final farewell from Miles Stevenson, Director of Development.
Next year the University will be hosting a reunion lunch for the Classes of 1959 and 1960 on Saturday 26 June 2010, to celebrate their 50 and 60 years since graduating. Please follow the link below for further details.
Saturday 12th September saw graduates from 1969, 1979 and 1984 return to the University, to celebrate 25, 30 and 40 years since graduating. Alumni and guests enjoyed tours of the new student residences and the Information Commons.
The Thornbridge Brewery provided beer tasting to begin the celebrations over lunch and alumni enjoyed a look around the new student rooms as well as Halifax Hall, newly renovated as a conference centre.
Following lunch, groups took tours around the campus and many of the new buildings, including the award winning Information Commons. Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett hosted the evening’s activities, beginning with a champagne reception. The Pisgah Ensemble string quartet played for the guests amongst the picturesque surroundings of the Quadrangle of Firth Court. This was followed by an elegant three-course meal in Firth Hall.
Special guest speaker and alumnus Martin Fry (BA English Literature, 1979) of the band ABC gave a nostalgic speech with references to Sheffield in the 1980s, taking guests back to their student days. The evening ended in the early hours of Sunday morning with the guests dancing the night away at the Student Union’s Bar 1.
The 2010 Annual Alumni Reunion will be held on Saturday 11 September. All alumni are very welcome to attend and we would like to extend a special invitation to alumni who graduated from the anniversary years of 1970, 1980 and 1985. For more information please click on the link below.
