Congratulations to comedian and actor Eddie Izzard who completed a staggering 43 marathons in 52 days last week, clocking up 1100 miles.

Eddie, a Sheffield alumnus and Hon DLitt, took on the challenge for Sport Relief and his huge effort has so far raised over £200,000 for the charity. It is an amazing achievement considering that he only managed six week’s training beforehand and does not consider himself to be in the least bit sporty!

His journey began in London and took him to almost every corner of the UK, including a stint pounding the streets of Sheffield. He was supported every step of the way with people coming out to cheer him on, and another 500,000 following his every move on Twitter.

He finally arrived back in London just over seven weeks after he began his mammoth task, to complete his last marathon in just over 5 hours. Now he hopes to continue his new hobby – but only once the blisters have gone and his toenails have grown back!
