Medical School Class Of 1959 Reunion

The Medical School Class of 1959 held a 50th anniversary reunion weekend in Sheffield from 8 to 10 May 2009. Of the 46 surviving members of the group, no less than 27 attended, including some from as far afield as Toronto, Detroit, Nigeria and Queensland. With spouses and two widows, the total attendance reached 50. The event was organised by Ian Bronks, a retired psychiatrist living in Derbyshire.

The weekend got off to a suitably convivial start with a reception hosted by the Development and Alumni Relations Office, addressed by Prof. Tony Weetman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Medicine. On the Saturday morning there was a coach tour including visits to the Northern General Hospital and the Students' Union which evoked a mixture of nostalgia and admiration mounting to awe at the scale of the present facilities.

The day ended with dinner at the Kenwood Hall Hotel, followed by a fascinating presentation by Prof. George Bentley, a member of the group, combining memories, often hilarious, of student days in the fifties, illustrated by many contemporary photographs and other archival material, sent in by class members or unearthed by the speaker, with reflections on what the class have achieved since then.

The Cass of 1959 have held several previous reunions but this was universally agreed to be the best yet.
