The elegance of the British Embassy in Tokyo played host to a prestigious reception for alumni and friends of the University held, in association with HSBC. The British Ambassador to Japan, Mr David Warren, kindly agreed to host the event and the University party were joined by alumni and special guests from HSBC, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and a number of prestigious Universities from around Japan.

Mr Warren gave a warm welcome speech to all 130 guests, which was followed by a speech from Professor Dominic Shellard, Pro-Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, from the University of Sheffield. Professor Shellard spoke about the strong links that the University is forging in Japan and updated all alumni and friends on recent developments at the University. The guests were also addressed by Mr Joseph Dwyer, from HSBC, the co-sponsor of the event. Professor Tony Ryan, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Science, from the University of Sheffield gave a speed lecture on ‘All the science under the sun’. Finally, Mr Kiso, the Director General for International Affairs at the MEXT, also spoke about the links being made between the University and MEXT.
