Annual Alumni Reunion 2014
Alumni were welcomed back to Sheffield for the eighth Annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday 13 September.
The reunion took place for the classes of 1974, 1984 and 1989 who were celebrating twenty-five, thirty and forty years since graduating from the University. We were delighted that this year’s reunion had the best turn out ever, with over 200 alumni and guests in attendance. There were alumni from as far as Singapore and Lebanon who came especially to celebrate their anniversary year.
Welcome drinks were served in the Interval Café, known by many of those attending as the Graves building and original Students’ Union. Alumni office staff, accompanied by current students then led five tours of the campus, including the ever popular Information Commons and its impressive library facilities for the twenty-first century student.
After the campus tours, alumni enjoyed a sit down and a bite to eat in the brand new Inox Dine in the Students’ Union.
For the first time ever, the lunch incorporated a ride on the legendary Arts Tower Paternoster. Once alumni got
to level 18 they had the chance to look around the top floor and take in the fantastic view over the city. At the top there was a prize draw for a special piece of memorabilia, an Arts Tower mug. The winner of the draw was Margaret Smith.
After the excitement of the paternoster, alumni took a tour of the Students’ Union building. The four tours were led by current students who could share their own experiences of the Students’ Union. The tour stopped off in the Media Hub, the home to Forge Media, which produces the student newspaper, website and radio station. Students from the Media Hub were on hand to show alumni around the facilities and answer questions.
Following a brief stop in Bar One for refreshments, half the group went to see the new Medical School, whilst the rest were taken up to the Endcliffe Student Village to see the student accommodation, as well as a tour of Halifax Hall Hotel.
The evening was very special, not only did the weather stay fine, but for the first time there was an informal option of a BBQ in Bar One. This meant there were even more alumni who came back to Sheffield for the reunion than even before.
The BBQ was a good chance for friends to meet up and reminisce in an informal setting. There were just over 80 alumni in attendance.
The Alumni Reunion Dinner took place alongside the BBQ and there were 104 guests in attendance. Alumni enjoyed sparkling drinks reception in Firth Court Quad and a four course dinner in Firth Hall, hosted by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett. Entertainment this year was from magician Andy Taylor, who impressed guests with various tricks at the dinner table.
We were delighted to welcome 1984 alumnus Stephen Sly to the dinner as guest speaker, who gave an engaging and witty speech about his time at the University.
The reunion concluded with alumni from the black tie dinner joining in the celebrations at Bar One with those alumni who attended the BBQ. It was fantastic to see alumni from all decades joined together for the much loved Pop Tarts Reunited event which went on to 2am.
