House of Lords Alumni Reception - 4 February 2016

Susanna Chiu, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, The Rt Hon Lord Blunkett, Professor Shearer West.On Thursday 4 February we were delighted to welcome over 200 alumni and guests to a University of Sheffield alumni reception at the House of Lords. The Rt Hon Lord Blunkett, visiting Professor at the University's department of Politics, was our host for the evening. Lord Blunkett graduated from the University in 1972 with a BA in Political Theory and Institutions. He was MP for the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough constituency for 28 years in a high-profile political career that saw him serve as the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

Alumni started the evening in Westminster Hall, before being taken on a guided tour through the Houses of Parliament, seeing inside the House of Lords and the House of Commons chambers. The tour finished off in the Cholmondeley Room where the reception took place, looking out onto the bank of the Thames. At the reception, alumni enjoyed drinks and canap├ęs, as well as networking and sharing University tales in the splendid surroundings.

Our Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett addressed guests on the night, welcomed them to the House of Lords, and thanked alumni for their continuing support. He also spoke of ways in which the University is prioritising supporting its students to gain professional experience, such as its AMRC apprenticeships

Sir Keith then introduced Lord Blunkett who recounted some of his memories of his time studying at Sheffield, such as the one (and only) occasion he attempted the Paternoster with his dog! He spoke passionately about the support and guidance he received as a University of Sheffield student and how it set him on the path to success. A proud moment for all came when Lord Blunkett declared if given the option of either his professorship at Sheffield or his peerage in the Lords, he would have chosen his professorship every time.

As always the event was extremely popular, selling out in record time, with over 200 people on the waiting list. To ensure you're the first to hear about events such as this please remember to keep us informed of your most up to date contact details - you can do this on our website here.
