House of Lords Alumni Reception 2017
On Wednesday 1 March we were delighted to welcome over 200 alumni and guests to a University of Sheffield alumni reception at the House of Lords. The Rt Hon Lord Blunkett, visiting Professor at the University's department of Politics, was our host for the second year running and attended the event in addition to the University’s President & Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, the Chancellor, The Rt Hon Lady Justice Rafferty, plus a number of other University staff.
Alumni started the evening in Westminster Hall, before being taken on a guided tour through the Houses of Parliament. The evening of the event happened to coincide with the House of Lords debating the Brexit Bill. This debate continued as the event took place and meant a number of our alumni and guests had the opportunity to sit in the Public Gallery to see the Lords in session. This proved a highlight of the evening for many with alumni noting how much historical poignancy the evening exuded.
The tours finished off in the Cholmondeley Room where the reception took place, looking out over the Thames. At the reception, alumni enjoyed drinks and canapés, as well as networking and sharing University tales in the splendid surroundings.
Our Vice-Chancellor addressed guests on the night, welcomed them to the House of Lords, and thanked alumni for their continued support. He also spoke of ways in which the University is prioritising supporting its students to gain professional experience, such as its AMRC apprenticeships and discussed fundraising plans for the Sheffield Scanner campaign.
Sir Keith then introduced Lord Blunkett who again recounted some of his memories of his time studying at Sheffield whilst highlighting the current issues affecting Higher Education, such as those relating to Brexit and the European Union.
As always the event was extremely popular, with over 800 alumni applying for a ballot entry. To ensure you're the first to hear about events such as this please remember to keep us informed of your most up to date contact details - you can do this via our Update Your Details form.
