House of Lords Alumni Reception - Wednesday 9 October 2013

We were delighted to welcome 200 alumni and guests to a University of Sheffield alumni drinks reception at the prestigious House of Lords venue on the evening of Wednesday 9 October. This is the fifth time we have held the event and the evening was once again kindly hosted by The Rt Hon the Lord Hattersley. He was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992 and received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield in 1998.Guests

Alumni enjoyed taking tours of the Houses of Parliament before the drinks and canapés reception which was held in the Cholmondeley Room overlooking the River Thames.

Chancellor of the University Sir Peter Middleton, GCB welcomed guests to the House of Lords and thanked alumni for their continuing support. He also spoke of ways in which alumni can support their Alma Matter through volunteering and providing work experience opportunities for current students. This was followed by Lord Hattersley who gave a short speech about this affection for the city of Sheffield and the University. The speeches were concluded by Professor Paul White, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching, who spoke of the University’s recent achievements and thanked Sir Peter and Lord Hattersley for hosting the reception.

The event was once again very popular, with 200 guests attending. Alumni who were on last year’s reserve list received a priority invitation to this year’s event.
