Annual Alumni Reunion 2011
Over 200 alumni came back to Sheffield this year for the University’s fifth Annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday 10 September.
Alumni from various graduation years returned, with particular emphasis on the alumni of 1971, 1981 and 1986 returning to celebrate 40, 30 and 25 years since graduating.
The reunion incorporated the Annual General Meeting of Convocation which took place in the morning and enabled attendees to take a tour of the campus prior to the meeting.
Following tours of campus led by a mixture of staff and current students, lunch was held in City View Café, University House where alumni caught up with friends and compared notes on their University days.
Guests were then taken on tours of the impressive new Students’ Union building, where they met current students and were shown a demonstration of the work that goes on in the Media Hub, the home of the student newspaper, website and radio station.
After a short break in the newly refurbished Bar One, alumni were then taken by coach to the Endcliffe Student Village, where they were led on a tour of the University’s student accommodation, including Halifax Hall, which is now a dedicated conference centre.
After returning to main campus, the daytime activities came to a close, in time for everyone to prepare for the Annual Reunion Dinner.
The evening activities were hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett, starting with a sparkling drinks reception and followed by a tasty three course evening meal served in Firth Hall. Magic by Joe Knight kept guests entertained between courses and provided a fun element to the evening.
Special guest speaker Paul Mason gave an insight into his University days, amusing guests with tales of how his degree in the unusual mix of Music and Politics has shaped his career and enabled him with a sense that anything is possible!
The evening concluded with guests continuing the celebrations at the Students’ Union, first in Bar One and then on to student club night ‘Pop Tarts Reunited’. A mixture of reunion guests, other alumni and current students all danced the night away together into the early hours of Sunday morning, despite several alumni insisting at dinner that they would just ‘go for a bit to see what it’s like’!
The 2012 reunion will be held on Saturday 8th September. Alumni from all graduation years are very welcome to attend and a special invitation is extended to alumni who graduated in 1972, 1982 and 1987.
