Annual Alumni Reunion 2012
The sun shone brightly in Sheffield as the Alumni Relations team welcomed back over two hundred alumni to the 2012 Annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday 8 September.
Open to all alumni across the years, a special emphasis was placed on the anniversary years of 1972, 1982 and 1987, in celebration of twenty-five, thirty and forty years since graduating from the University.
The reunion incorporated the Annual General Meeting of Convocation which took place in the morning in the Interval Café (the former Graves’ building) and enabled attendees to take a tour of the campus prior to the meeting.
Tours of the campus were led by staff and current students, with alumni getting an opportunity to see how the University has changed since their student days, with some alumni not having been back to Sheffield for decades.
Lunch then followed in the Students’ Union, where alumni caught up with friends and reminisced about their time at Sheffield. Then it was time to take a tour of the award-winning Students’ Union, including a demonstration of the work that goes on in the Media Hub, the home of the student newspaper, website and radio station.
The afternoon saw most alumni taking a trip up to the Endcliffe Student Village, whilst others took a tour of their former department, led by academic staff in Biblical Studies, Physics and Architecture.
As the daytime activities came to a close, the preparation for the reunion dinner began.
The sun stayed out as alumni returned in their finery for a sparkling drinks reception in the Quadrangle at Firth Court in the evening. Groups of friends gathered for photographs to mark their special anniversary years and many friendships were rekindled.
Guests then enjoyed a four-course dinner in Firth Hall, hosted by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Burnett. The alumni team were delighted to welcome back magician Joe Knight, who once again entertained guests and added to the fun atmosphere of the evening.
We were delighted to have 1972 alumnus Judge His Honour Ian Carlson as guest speaker, who shared stories of his student days which struck a chord with many other guests in the room.
The reunion concluded with many guests continuing the celebrations in Bar One at the Students’ Union, where alumni from all decades joined together for the much loved Pop Tarts Reunited event. The reunion guests gave the younger alumni a run for their money, partying into the early hours to round off what had been for many a reminiscent and thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane.
Class gift campaign
Each year the anniversary years are invited to contribute to the class gift campaign through the Alumni Fund. We are pleased to announce that the amount raised so far by the anniversary years of 1972, 1982 and 1987, including Gift Aid and matched funding, is £11,396.25. In addition, the anniversary years of 1952 and 1962 have so far raised £12,640 including Gift Aid. The total therefore so far, for this year’s class gift campaign, totals £24,036.25. We thank all the alumni who have contributed to the campaign.
