Annual Alumni Reunion 2013
Alumni were welcomed back to Sheffield for the seventh Annual Alumni Reunion on Saturday 7 September.
The reunion, aimed at alumni from the classes of 1973, 1983 and 1988 who were celebrating twenty-five, thirty and forty years since graduating from the University, attracted a good turn-out again this year, with alumni travelling from all corners of the globe to attend.
Welcome drinks were served in the Interval Café, known by many of those attending as the Graves building and original Students’ Union. Alumni office staff, accompanied by current students then led tours of the campus, including the ever popular Information Commons and its impressive library facilities for the twenty-first century student.
After working up an appetite on the tours, alumni enjoyed a sit down and a bite to eat in the Students’ Union, taking time to rekindle old friendships with classmates from years gone by.
A tour of the new Students’ Union building was next on the itinerary, with a special emphasis on the Media Hub, the home of the Forge Media, which produces the student newspaper, website and radio station. Students from the Media Hub were on hand to show alumni around the facilities and answer questions from inquisitive alumni.
Following a brief stop in Bar One for refreshments, half the group went to see the new Medical School, whilst the rest were taken up to the Endcliffe Student Village to see the student accommodation, as well as a tour of the newly opened Halifax Hall Hotel.
The reunion concluded with a sparkling drinks reception and four course dinner in Firth Court, hosted by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett. Entertainment this year came courtesy of magician Andy Taylor, who wowed guests with his wizardry.
A group of over thirty dentists used the occasion to celebrate thirty years since graduating from the University, with some travelling from as far away as Malaysia and Japan to join their alma mater. The Engineering faculty were also well represented by a group of alumni from the class of 1973, including one graduate from South Africa.
We were delighted to welcome 1988 alumnus Andy Haldane to the dinner as guest speaker, who gave an insightful speech into his days at the University and his successful career since.
The reunion concluded with many guests continuing the celebrations in Bar One at the Students’ Union, where alumni from all decades joined together for the much loved Pop Tarts Reunited event.

In addition, the anniversary years of 1953 and 1963 have so far raised £42,449.36 this year, including Gift Aid. The total therefore so far, for this year’s class gift campaign, totals £72,934.86. We thank all the alumni who have contributed to the campaign.
